Description

The park is located close to the Marechal Carmona dam in the Tagus river International Region, at Idanha-a-Nova, near the Monfortinho Hot Springs, within the Beira Baixa bordering area.



This area is rich in history and architectural heritage, where the use of a fertile subsoil made of granite and schist provides constructions with a peculiar aesthetic value. Moreover, there are findings of Roman, Suebi and Visigoths settlements. Altogether it offers to visitors splendid landscapes, from which castles stand out at Idanha-a-Nova, Idanha-a-Velha, Penha Garcia and Monsanto (known as the Most Portuguese Village in Portugal).



With strong traditions and habits, its popular, folk music shows evidence of clear rural roots. The ethnographic folk music group of Idanha-a-Nova created in 1935 is one of the most important representatives of this sort of music.



Idanha is also a land of highly religious people; almost all places have their own religious procession; the larger and best known is the annual feast to Senhora do Almortão, which takes place on the third Monday after Easter.



Besides its open-hearted people, the region also offers a wonderful gastronomy. It is recommended to taste the green asparagus stew, broad bean and coriander soup and rabbit rice, which are among the most appreciated specialties.



With modern infrastructures, camping grounds and bungalows, swimming pool and sports grounds, this park is popular among families and lovers of open air sports, such us cycling and canoeing.
